Sports at Mays High School
At Mays High School, sports are more than something to watch. They are a big part of who we are as a school. Whether it’s football, basketball, cheerleading, or track, sports bring students together and help us learn lessons that last a lifetime. Playing sports at Mays isn’t just about winning games; it’s about teamwork, discipline, and school spirit.
When students join a team, they quickly learn that success takes effort and being consistent. Practices can be long and tiring, but every hour spent running, training, or learning plays makes a difference. One student-athlete I talked to said, “Being on the team taught me how to push myself. Even when I’m tired, I know I can keep going.” That kind of determination helps students not only on the field but also in the classroom and in many areas of life.

Sports also teach teamwork. Every player has an important role, and no one can win alone. Learning how to communicate, listen, and work with others builds strong friendships. Many athletes say their teammates start to feel like family. They support each other, celebrate together, and lift each other up after tough games. One basketball player shared, “We win together, we lose together, but no matter what, we always have each other’s backs.”
Another great thing about sports at Mays is how they build school pride. On game days, the energy around the school changes. Students wear their team colors, the band plays, and the crowd cheers loudly from the stands. Parents, teachers, and classmates all come out to show support. That excitement reminds us that Mays is one big community.
